Just in case anyone has the same problem I had, here are the steps I took to fix
it:
For the lost CD Rom, I used a download thread to download CD Deluxe. It is as follows:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs
This was downloaded to Windows Explorer and upon installation, I rebooted and Bingo!
I also had an incompatible ATAPI message on start up and I went through the database
files and deleted programs that I thought were deleted before but weren't. Be careful
though because of the file sharing thing. I narrowed the files down to the ones that
I had downloaded just prior to my getting the first "idiot" message telling me something
was incompatible. I haven't recovered my D drive, but the CD Rom Deluxe restored
my CD Rom in C drive. So far, so good. If I can help anyone, please let me know.
Also, DEX is a pretty smart person, listen if he gives you advice. Thanks again folks.
