Copying files

When copying a large number of files from one HD to another, suddenly everything stops with the message, "cannot copy [file name]. File exists." What kind of stupid message is that? I mean, it obviously couldn't copy if it DIDN'T exist, right? To make things worse, the process doesn't simply skip the problem file and continue, but the entire process just stops. Can someone please tell me what's going on?
