FYI:
Another application that induces this problem is the Mirror Driver of Zenworks for
Desktops.
I uninstalled this component of the Remote Management Agent and toggled "Show Icons
using All Possible Colors", and voila!
Some links to help:
http://www.novell.com/documentation/zenworks65/index.html?page=/documentation/zenworks65/dminstall/data/bppx567.html

rmsetdrv.exe - Zenworks for Desktops 4; switch between mirror driver and Drishti
(?) May allow you to keep the mirror driver installed. Untested.
The moral of this story is: Remote control apps = evil; and must be destroyed!
