A few weeks ago, my computer started randomly
shutting itself down.
No error message or anything, it would just power
down.
This would happen when the pc had been on several
hours, recently it has been happening more often,
and quicker, like after just an hour of being on.
Afterwards, the only way to start up again is to unplug
the power, wait a little then plug in the power again,
then the pc automatically starts up again.
This can happen when using the net, playing music or
using word, ie. no heavy demand task.

The PC in question is an old Compaq Presario.
500MHz P3, 320 mb ram, integrated Intel graphics.
Originally Win98se, upgraded to Win 2000 Pro 6
months ago.
Since purchase it has been upgraded with extra ram, a
network card, SB live soundcard, and a DVD burner.

Note that the last ugrade was the DVD burner 6
months ago, the same time as the upgrade to Win2k.
From then till a few weeks ago, the machine has been
very stable, no BSODs or anything serious.

M.
