Workgroups and Netbeui removal

I am trying to remove Netbeui from a working workgroup. With Netbeui on, all 3
W2K systems can see each other and map drives.
I then unchecked Netbeui and rebooted 2 of the systems. I also entered 2 new LMHosts
file on each of the systems. They could not see each other.
As the next try I unchecked use LMHosts on the Wins tab of the TCP/IP Advanced properties
page, and created HOSTS files for each system. Still unable to see the other system
from the first one.
Then I rechecked Netbeui and everything was normal again.
They are trying to use a SQLServer database that appeaers to conflict with Netbeui.
Any susggestions?
