Sorry, I don't have the answer either. But a quick check using google casts some question about using SQL with TCP/IP. Are you sure the SQL does not work with the older protocol? That seems strange.
And yes, that is common for windows machines to not connect without the Novell protocol. In ssome cases it has to be used, but I do not know why, that is what I have read.
Have you tried to "force" the computers to see each other using the find compter thing? I have found that in some cases that breaks the ice and then after that the computers remember each other.
