SUCCESS !!!!
I found a product key changer, changed the key, did a repair reinstall of windows
2000 and everything came back without losing any settings.
Windows 2000, just like XP has 2 type of repairs - the standard system files repair,
and then an actual complete windows reinstall repair.
Turned out that the active desktop was corrupt and keeping the desktop from coming
up.
There were a few corrupted programs which I reinstalled, but a lot better than having
to reinstall everything from scratch.
The lesson here is always keep your product key handy and make sure it is valid
because it could be a life saver.
thanks.....
