Odd login issue

I have windows 2000 and have different users setup on it. When I tried to logon to one of them "Tim", the desktop started up like it was the first time logging on as that user. The windows tip screen opened. When I started internet explorer, the internet setup screen came up and the favorites were the default ones. I looked at the documents and settings directory, and there is a subdirectory for "Tim" which has the favorites, desktop icons, etc. But there is also a subdirectory called "Tim.DESKTOP" which appears it is login on to. Can anyone help me in getting rid of "Tim.DESKTOP" so I can get logon to the real "Tim"? Is there some type of virus that causes this? I ran my virus scan and it did not detect any.
