Once upon a time I was browsing an office supply store and there was a CDRW at half
the price I'd expect. I think it was $20. And it was a 52x-24x-52x. How could
I lose?
It was always balky warming up and reading a CD. Often Win98 or the BIOS just couldn't
locate it and I'd boot up with My Computer telling me there was no CD drive this
session.
I did successfully burn a couple CDs from it. But it helped a lot that I set Nero
Burning to write at 8X and not the claimed 24X.
I've forgotten the brand name. Sorry, my Freudian psychiatrist or Scientological
priest or Recovered Memory Abuse therapist will all tell me someday that unless
I bring unless I bring that memory to the foreground I will never be sane.
But I bought a $10 game that required a DVD. So I went to CompUSA and got a middling
priced DVD CDRW. It did not claim to be ultra fast. It just claimed to work. I
don't remember but I think it's CompUSA's generic brand.
Another older problem is overheating. 2 generations ago I had a CD ROM that often
failed. I noticed that the CDs were hot. Now when I installed it in my DIY computer
I had properly followed the rituals of American computer religion and given the CD
drive its proper throne as the top slot. The lowly and rarely used floppy was placed
below.
Then it occurred to me that placing it right at the top of the computer meant there
was no place for heat to rise or circulate. Also, the floppy only runs if I'm actually
reading or writing a diskette.
In my garage there was a scrap computer thrown out behind a computer store. I take
them home because they provide nice sheet metal and plastic for hobby projects.
It had a metal bracket for holding a 3½" drive in a 5¼" slot. The bracket had plenty
of space around it. So now the floppy, which almost never generates heat and has
lots of room around it anyway, is at the top. The heat from the CD rises over it
and the CD (which is currently the DVD CDRW) runs cool.
That doesn't exactly match your symptoms but it is all I know.
When you finally get your problem straightened out, tell us all what was the cause
and effect, if you will.
