Windows Media Player 9.0 Crashes all the time

Anytime I try and use WMP to access video via a website, or use File->Open URL, WMP
totally crashes.
Running Win2K SP4, Firefox 2.0. With website embedded video, I usually get the message
saying "Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library The plug-in performed
an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to restart Firefox" Most of the
time I can just continue using Firefox to browse, but once in a while it is all dead
and I need to crash out.
Please note that it will also fail with IE 6.0 embedded website video, so it is not
some Firefox plug-in at fault. Also if I use File->Open URL, it crashes, but if
I download said video locally, it will run fine. I have also taken local video that
works, uploaded it to my webspace and tried to access it, but crashed. So it is
truly something to do with accessing video remotely.
I have uninstalled the WMP chain of patches and security stuff so as to roll it back
to the original version whilst in Safe Mode, then restarted in normal mode, ran the
9.0 install, and then did a Windows Update to get the security stuff, all to no avail.
I ran a virus scan and found nothing. Java is enabled to the fullest. As far as
I can recall, no significant system changes have occurred since this problem surfaced
(though I could be just forgetting something here).
It was like this for a while about a year or two ago, and I fixed it to where it
was actually working by getting a new version (9.0). This worked for a long time,
and then about 2 months ago just up and died for no apparent reason. Other media
players such as DIVX do work, but I cannot get Firefox to use DIVX when viewing embedded
webpage video.
As far as I can tell, no version past 9.0 will work in Win2K (Gee thanks, Bill Gates),
so I cannot upgrade to 10 or 11 - please correct me if I am wrong here.
