On my Windows 2000 server, I've left Windows Media Player at version 6.4 and installed Windows Media Lite along with the WMP9 codecs for WMP 6.4 and the KLite Codec Pack.

I haven't had any problems. The server's got all kinds (and ages) of .mpg/.wmv/.avi/ files on it, and I've watched streaming WMP9 videos on Firefox 2.

Once catch is, is that you'd be best off running Windows Media Lite with a fresh install of Win2K that's left at WMP 6.4, specifically to use Windows Media Lite.

WMP 9 is far more of a headache with Windows 98/ME! I do, however, hate WMP 9's clumsy "integration" into the Explorer shell with associated file types in Win2K...

Athlon 3000+ 64 - 1024 MB RAM = 98SE (@768 MB RAM) & XP Pro

IBM ThinkPad PIII 900 - 384 MB RAM = 98SE & XP Pro SP2
