Actually, I did ask Maxtor...but they misunderstood me. They just repeated one of their FAQs, viz. safely shutting down an external drive, and that's not what I meant. Oh well; thanks anyway.

Come to think of it, the drive has its own power supply - I wonder if a drive which gets its power directly from the PC would shut down?
