OK here is my follow up on this issue. The answer that I got here, I really didn't
have the non-laziness to implement. So I resigned myself to not dealing with it
- and thus not being able to see the videos when accessed via embedded website, or
File->Open URL.

This went on for at least a week, and every so often I would try it and of course
I got the same crash.

Until last night. It is as if there never was a problem.

I have not made any system changes at all. I have the Microsoft Autoupdating "Feature"
turned off.

I can view embedded video at any website. I can use File->Open URL without crashing
again.

So in this case, the solution was "ignore it and it will go away". Either that or
Microsoft happens to patch software without saying anything? But Win2K and WMP9
are old stuff so what gives?

Odd.
