Keyboards & mice are cheap & easy to replace (how do you know the mouse
doesn't work if you can't see anything?)

Does the computer have all the necessary hardware still in it, hard drive, video card etc?
Does it still have Windows installed on it even?

Start by getting a bit of history from your friend.
