Dim screen..

My boss was cleaning out the storage room yesterday and he brought me a laptop and
said if I could make it work I could have it. So, I figure why not? It's got Windows
2000 Professional, it's a Sony Vaio PCG-GRS100k. The problem is, you can see the
screen unless you lay it pretty much all the way back under a light. I've turned
up the brightness as far as possible and it's still pretty unreadable. I've hooked
up an external monitor to it, so I'm guessing it's not the video card? The only thing
I can figure is the backlight or inverter. I wouldn't mind replacing them, but I'm
not totally sure if that's the problem, or where I can even buy new ones. Any ideas?
Thanks.
