If it's Western Digital use their free DLG (Data Lifeguard) programs which may work
on other brands as well. I've never worked thru the frustrations of FDISK successfully
either. DLG is easy to understand and just plain works. It is not a sophisticated
tool so it cannot repartition without erasing the data. I've never heard of any
freeware that does. Check out all the Drive Utilities:
Disclaimer: I have no connection to Major Geeks. It's just such a great bazaar.
To prove I don't work for them here is a warning: Downloads have to happen in one
session. If you pause a download, you cannot resume.
And Data Lifeguard is hyperbolic hype. It's just a partioning and formatting utility
tossed in for their customers who just bought a new drive. It has no protective
features.
