It's weird but the problem turned out to be the fact that I did not uninstall a version
of Norton Antivirus on the laptop before installing Norton System Works. What's really
weird is that the problems persisted on the network even with the laptop turned off.
Once I uninstalled the Norton Antivirus, everything returned to normal functionality.
