The proper way to set up DNS:

On the server, open up the DNS admin tool. Right click on your DNS server and choose properties. Click on Forwarders tab. In "Selected Domain Forwarder IP address list" there should be entries for your ISP's DNS servers. With the assumption that you only have one DNS server, the only IP addresses that should be listed here are your ISP's DNS servers. Secondly, check the IP configuration for the server. Make sure it points to itself and does not have ISP's DNS servers listed. Lastly, make sure your client computers DNS points to your server's IP address for DNS. That should solve all of your problems. No need to demote server and reconfigure. No need to recreate profiles.
