External Hard Drive stops my broadband

I recently bought a 250gb External Hard Drive which works fine when connected to
my computer by USB. But when I have both the hard drive and my wireless router connected,
my broadband connection starts dropping then turns itself off. They are both connected
to separate USB ports and I have swapped them both around and used different leads
but to no effect. Does anyone know what the problem is?
