HP photosmart 3180 scanner not recognized

2000 Pro doesn't recognize HP 3100 Scanner tho it prints from screen and copies.
How can I get the computer to recognize the scanner of the Photosmart all-in-one
printer/copier. I've been through numerous efforts following HP's Help to no avail.
I have a Visioneer 8100 scanner that 2000 recognizes and which works fine using the
TWAIN device; however, it cannot scan digital memory cards, which was why I got the
HP in the first place.
Am I just stuck with an inherent conflict?
