Mysterious Serial Port Driver Problem

I am running Windows 2000 on a very old Compaq somebody gave me. I've been having
some problems with it, but usually they are common and can be solved with intelligence
and Google. Please note I have spent many hours searching online to the best of my
ability, to
no avail.
For some reason, Windows cannot use the serial port. I have used the Add/Troubleshoot
New Hardware wizard, and it says there are no drivers available. I have used the
search options to try to get it to download the drivers.
This does not work, and I get a message saying that there are no drivers to be found.
I looked in the system folders-Serial.sys is there-and I can't identify the chipset.
I have looked at the entire area around the serial port and at the port itself,
there are NO SIGNS TO IDENTIFY THE CHIPSET'S MANUFACTURER. Therefore, I cannot go
to the manufacturer's site to see if there is some sort of driver there.
This problem has me entirely stumped, and I would greatly appreciate it if somebody
could help.
