Are the serial (COM) ports (2 of them) enabled in the BIOS? (that only goes for
the physical serial connections available on the motherboard) If not, Windows can
not use them. An internal modem can only use the COM port addressing (IRQ's and
I/O address) if the ports are disabled in the BIOS. If your modem is on either IRQ
3 or 4, (which will usually correspond to COM 1 and 3 share the same IRQ, COM 2 and
4 share an IRQ), then one or both of the motherboards physical COM ports have been
disabled in the BIOS. Therefore, Windows will not be able to see them or assign an
address. What do you need to use the COM ports for?
