computerwon't boot after update

I was given an old Dell Dimenions computer running Windows 2000 that has been out
of service for quite a while. At first, it seemed to work well. It had no virus
protection, so I installed the free AVG program. After scanning, AVG said it had
removed two trojans. Then Windows prompted that updates were available and I accepted.
The update process took so long that I decided to let it run while I slept. The
next morning there was a prompt telling me to "insert boot disk in a: press any key
when ready." I had no boot disk but downloaded a set of four from the web. When
I try to run a boot disk, I get a short run of the floppy disk followed by the prompt,
"remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart." When I do so, it just
reverts to the prompt about inserting a boot disk.
I do not have access to another machine running 2000. I made a bootable floppy
on my XP Home machine using the format menu. With it I can get the drive A command
prompt. When I then try to look at drive C, I get the message, invalid drive spec."
I do not have the Windows 2000 CD's.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks
