((( SEE BELOW ))) SYSTEMced Windows 2000 Registry Repair Utility 01/13/2004 Registry Repair Windows Bootable CD SYSTEMced Windows 2000 Microsoft released the Windows 2000 Registry Repair Utility at their downloads site. The utility fills a void in my software toolbox I've been trying to fill for some time. There are ways to boot into the recovery console and fix the registry but there's never been an easy way and they often don't work. This utility has already saved more than one computer I administer. The instructions provided with the utility require creating six Windows XP Setup Floppy Disks and then running an installer that copies some files to the sixth disk. To run the program you need to boot from the floppy drive and successively insert each disk until you get to the last one. The program then asks which installation to fix and hopefully fixes it. I wasn't satisfied with loading six floppies to get the job done. My toolkit only includes one blank floppy. Everything else I need is kept on CDs. If I need a bootable floppy I have images on a CD that I can load to the floppy as needed. So I set out to figure out how to move the utility to CD. I tried booting from a DOS floppy and running the program but it does not run in DOS mode. I also tried adding it to a Bart's PE-Builder CD but it didn't want to run there either. My last try was to run it from the recovery console but I had no such luck. The six disks I had created were obviously some flavor of recovery console, which can be booted from CD, so I turned to Google and started searching. Solution Requirements To create a Windows 2000 Registry Repair Utility some programs and files are required: Windows XP or Windows 2000 bootable installation CD Windows 2000 Registry Repair Utility Windows XP Setup Floppy Disks Bart's Boot Image Extractor Disk Image file Extractor CDRTools for Windows Assumptions Drive D: is a hard drive Drive E: is the CD-ROM drive Directions Create 3 folders on drive D: named w2krepaircd, w2krepairfiles and temp Create a subfolder named i386 in w2krepaircd Download the files above to the w2krepairfiles folder Unzip the contents of extrac21.zip, bbie10.zip, and cdrtools-1.11a12-win32-bin.zip to a folder that is in your path. Open a DOS prompt and navigate to w2krepairfiles C:\>d: D:\>cd\w2krepairfiles Extract the boot floppies to a temporary folder D:\w2krepairfiles\>WinXP_EN_PRO_BF.EXE /t:d:\temp /c /q Change to the temporary directory and extract the contents of each .img file to w2krepaircd\i386 D:\w2krepairfiles\>cd\temp D:\temp>extract -x *.img d:\w2krepaircd\i386 Change back to the w2krepairfiles directory D:\temp>cd\w2krepairfiles Extract the registry utility to w2kregrepair and click yes when prompted to overwrite SPCMDCON.SYS D:\w2krepairfiles>ChkReg.EXE /t:d:\w2krepaircd\i386 /c /q Change to the w2krepaircd directory D:\w2krepairfiles>cd\w2krepaircd Insert the Windows XP CD and extract the boot sector from it to the temporary directory D:\w2krepaircd>bbie e: If you used a Windows XP CD for the boot image, copy 2 files from the CD to the current directory D:\w2krepaircd>copy e:\WIN51 D:\w2krepaircd>copy e:\WIN51IP OR Or if you used a Windows 2000 CD for the boot image, use these commands to create the 2 files above D:\w2krepaircd>echo Windows >WIN51 D:\w2krepaircd>echo Windows >WIN51IP Create the iso image of the repair CD. This step can be done with Nero, EasyCD or something else but this is burner software neutral. (This command should be all one line) D:\w2krepaircd>mkisofs.exe -v -N -iso-level 3 -V "W2KRegRepair" -b image1.bin -boot-load-size 4 -no-emul-boot -hide image1.bin -hide boot.catalog -A W2KREGREPAIR -sysid "Win32" -o "d:\w2krepair.iso" "d:\w2krepaircd" Burn the ISO with your favorite CD burning software.
