i am a bit late replying, but i wanted to make sure that the fix was really working. in effect what i did was to use the Windows 2000 Registry Repair Utility, but without making the whole shebang into a bootable CD, as Dex's post suggested. i made the six floppies and ran the .exe file from microsoft. i'm not sure anymore the exact steps that i took, because nothing seemed to happen when i ran the .exe file. i think that i had to insert the sixth floppy to run the file. anyway, since then (a whole week) the computer has booted every time without error. so, case closed, i hope. thanks for the advice.
