Re Protection?

Just to follow up. The infections, Trojans, whatever, resulted from downloads of
free utilities such as Afreeripper-----just in case you wondered?
All were downloaded to desktop and scanned with both Adaware and AVG.
Warned by Kapersky where to look,recently found Avast took them out. So Avast seems
to score best------------??
Is this a common experience?
