Getting Rid of Internet Explorer & Microsoft Outlook Icons On the Desktop

I'd like to clear my desktop of unnecessary icons. However, there are two icons there which are not shortcuts. I'm referring to Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook. I seldom use IE and most of my email accounts are free but do not allow third-party applications to access them. I'd like to delete these two desktop icons but am afraid by doing so might disrupt the functionality of IE and Outlook Express. How do I delete these two safely?
