Disappearing Desktop

I contracted a virus or spyware yesterday, and I think I was able to get rid of it by using two antivirus softwares and three registry cleaners. However, if I reboot or re-login, the desktop comes up briefly, and if I am quick enough, I can bring up a program, but the entire desktop then disappears, and all I am left with is the blue screen. The status bar, start button, and all icons are gone. I would appreciate any help or suggestions anyone might have to restore the desktop. I already restored Win2k SP4 and update, but still have the problem. Thanks, Lincmark
