You can use the upgrade disc for a clean install but Windows will ask for a qualifing
original Win 9X/W2K or XP disc for verification of upgrade eligability to complete.
Also, you will seem to lose a little over 7 gig per 100 gig on the HDD due to the
measurement differences between the HDD manufacturer's way, and the way Windows
calculates space. That's normal and didn't used to be spelled out before several
lawsuits.
Partitioning a large drive is always preferable. Things like defragging and maintenance,
or backing up/imaging can take a long time, increasing heat and wear on the drive.
Generally still best to put Windows and your applications install on a smaller partition
say 100 gig max, and then divide the rest into one or two logical drives for data.
The setup program will allow you to do that in the beginning of the setup process.
It is pretty well documented and straight forward.
Be aware that W2K has not been fixed to recognize anything over 137 gig due to the
48 bit LBA not being enabled if you try to install W2K. There are fixes available
but would involve modifing a reg file on the original disc, slipstreaming SP3 or
4 into the disc then using the new disc for installing. XP needs at least SP1 to
recognize anything over 137 gig when it installs, which you should have if you buy
a new upgrade disc. Below is the partitioning guide KB from MS.. Good Luck!
