I have a Compaq N610 laptop with Win2k SP4, update rollup installed. I have for
a long time been using this machine to run dBASE 5.0 for DOS with TameDOS running
in the background.
One of the many reasons I have not upgraded from dBASE is that it has been running
so superbly well in this environment - until a few days ago. When I clicked on the
Quick Launch icon, the following error came up:
C:\Documents and Settings\Alan Masterman\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick
Launch\dBase.pif is not a valid Win32 application.
Double-clicking the executable produces this message:
C:\dBase\dbase.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
I renamed the dBASE folder, on the off-chance there might be some connection with
the folder-of-the-same-name problem, but that had no effect. Virus scanning reveals
nothing. If I insert the installation disc and try to re-instal, I get the same
message in relation to Instal.bat (a batch file I wrote to automate setup from a
CD) and Install.exe.
For the moment the problem is affecting only DOS programs (actually, Prince of Persia
is the only other one I have); in every other way the computer is behaving normally.
True Win32 applications run and instal without any problems.
The only clue I have is that on the same day two automatic updates from the MS site
downloaded and (as I thought) installed. However, when I go into the Update Wizard
Uninstall, it tells me there are no updates to uninstall.
Can anyone help with this?
