Addendum: I tried to run command.com from the Start > Run window, and the same error message comes up. According to Microsoft this means that the MS Java Virtual Machine is corrupted. MS then lists a response sequence which seems to be roughly the IT equivalent of re-carving Mt Rushmore or rebuilding the Sydney Opera House. I thought it would be simpler to re-instal the virtual machine, but that didn't work, so I suppose MS knew something I don't. I think I'll just restore my "basic system" backup...
