In 15 years of computing I've tried a lot of different antivirus software. Back
in the DOS days, Norton was the bomb. I used to get the Norton Utilities package
because their defrag and other system tools rocked. Sadly, in recent years, Norton
AV started to suck as badly as McAfee and I stopped paying for it. I then tried
AVG (free) for a while but it kept frapping so I said enough is enough. I've used
CA (Computer Associates) eTrust antivirus in industry for clients numerous times
over the years and was always quite happy with it. So, I paid for it and have been
using it for around 4 straight years now without any trouble whatsoever. In fact,
it's on all my Windows based PC's at home and on my wife's as well (not including
her work PC and laptop....they can pay for their own AV software.......lol). I'm
a firm believer in 'you get what you pay for' in this world as well as 'TANSTAAFL'
(there ain't no such thing as a free lunch) so I shy away from "free" software as
it usually runs in a diminished capacity compared to the pay-for-play version of
the same software. Also, you're a lot less likely to get much (if any) tech support
for "free" software. AVG is a prime example of this. Like I said, I tried their
"free" AV software. It piled up on my system numerous times and calling their tech
support was not of much use at all.In the end, it's all subjective. While
my experience with AVG wasn't impressive, others (including my wife) will swear by
it. So in the end, it's up to you to give it (or any other) a try and see how you
like it and how it works for you. Try several until you find one that runs properly
on your system and gives you what you want/need out of AV software.
