I have found my solution to this problem replacing the boot code in the MBR.
I use the free DOS program "Ranish Partition Manager" for the job. It is included
on some utility BootCDs including the ever-popular "Hiren's BootCD" (now bootable
to Windows XP a la Bart-PE).
I fixed my problem before examing the MBR for the before/after differences to know
exactly what was wrong. Maybe next time.
