I too have the same problem with a SONY USB stick (16GB), but only with the SONY. Under Linux I was able to create an NTFS partition on the stick, add and delete data to/from the partition without an issue, but if I plug it into a Windows box, Windows does not 'see' the NTFS partition, and keeps wanting to format it as FAT32.
