Freezing and then a BSOD is a typical symptom of a failed or failing hard drive.
If you have access to another machine, and you know the hard drive manufacturer,
see if they have a diagnostics utility to check the drive. Some do, (like Seagate,
Wester Digital) some don't (Figistu, Toshiba and OEM only manufacturers). You can
usually make a CD or a Foppy boot disk from their download to check the drive. At
this point, if the drive is still able to run at all, I would be pulling off my data
and prepare (be ready and have a spare drive) for replacing it. Since I repair and
build computers, I see it all the time. It costs far more for me to try and recover
data with no guarentee of success than if the customer was ready for it.. (keep backups
of data on at least 2 seperate forms of media. I use 3)

Programs like Spinrite (www.grc.com) can also fix some problems at least temporarily
(depending on the issues) so that you can at least get your data off the drive.

At this point the best advise, if you need to get data off the drive, is to slave
or install it into another machine and try and retrieve what you can off the drive
using Windows. Outside of that, if Windows can't access the drive, is to use software
that can try and retrieve data by other means. USB is not a good choice here since
more effective recovery and HDD utilities need direct access to the drive without
Windows running. You don't want to write anything to the drive until you have tried
to retrieve any data that is irreplaceble. Good Luck!
