It seems that a lack of support by third party software vendors determines whether
an OS is still useable or not.

I don't go to the WGA page out of principle. If you know the file name you can usually
track it down by googling for it.
ERPman is a good place to look for updates. I read the security bulletins, download
the updates, and archive them to keep them on hand.
