dun problems, possibly sp2 related

just installed advanced server the other day (using it in a class im taking). installed
sp2 earlier today and was having no problems for multiple reboots... left the machine
running and two other people used it while i was gone. when i came back 98se (dual-boot)
was running, which i thought was kind of strange. so i rebooted and loaded win2k.
startup usually takes a while... this time it took longer, something about starting
(nonexistant) network connections.
ok, fine... ill let it do whatever it wants. who am i to argue?
so windows finally loads and all looks alright until i decide to go online. right
when the connection window states "registering your computer on the network" (? dont
believe ive seen that before) cpu usage suddenly spikes to 100% - and stays there,
even after the connection is cancelled (i havnt even bothered to see if it will finally
connect). the task manager shows that 'services.exe' is the culprit, though i have
no clue what its doing. if i try and reboot, misc. things running in the background
decide to stop responding because the processor is at full load, though windows will
eventually shut down.
anyone with ideas? this is probably something really simple, but keep in mind that
i had never touched a win2k install until about two days ago.
