protocol over the Ethernet". Users do not have a permanent IP address but the ISP
assigns them a dynamic address every time they log on, as with a dial-up connection,
which they keep as long as they remain logged on. Earthlink uses WinPoet software
from Wind River for this. Last Friday I helped a guy to get his Earthlink DSL connection
up, and it took me 5 hours, 90 minutes talking to Earthlink customer service. However,
the problem was NOT with Earthlink or Wind River, but with the #4%@ Windows 98! (W98
asked for a file to uninstall Winpoet and to re-install it, and it wanted the W98
CD-ROM inserted - however, the file was packed in a .cab file so it could not find
it......)
