Question about 'Share an Internet Connection'

I have a question about Share an Internet Connection:

I want to know the correct settings for the second nic card in the host pc for W2000 to use ICS. Also I read the advice and have one other questions. I can only map drives on my client (W98) pc if Net Bui is installed. I notice that you suggest enabling Net Bui on the 1st Host Nic and not on the client, as it will disrupt ICS. Help.

The only protocol you need bound to the NIC that is connecting to the internet is TCP/IP. For the second NIC, the one that is connected to your internal LAN you can use NetBEUI (so the internal LAN NIC will have both NetBEUI and TCP/IP bound to it). Your 2nd NIC will likely end up with the following IP address in the TCP/IP settings: 192.168.0.1 with a default subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 (that's what ICS will assign to it, or at least, it did on my PC)

However, after several tries at getting ICS to run with little or no success I went back to Sygate which I know works (I've used it for several years now) as my proxy server software. Once you've had enough frustration with MS's ICS program (which has never worked very well) I suggest you do a quick search on the web for Sygate and download a demo copy of their home proxy server software. It's easy to install, configure and use.

I second that, I tried the ICS with a second nic..it did not work out for me and I tried to tweak all and I guess I didn't know what I was doing since it did not work. In any event, I have a peer to peer setup between 3 systems, and use Sygate to share the internet connection on dsl. Its works, and was very easy to setup, just install the Software on one pc to be the Server, while the others are installed as clients. The only configuration that has to be done is on the Server installation. Once set, it works perfectly. One caveat, using sygate instead of a router results in the shared connection not being as fast as it might when sharing the internet connection through a router, so consider that. If you have the money to afford it, a router is better way to go. But for the cheapest and easiest way to share a connection, Sygate is not bad. I heard Wingate is also another app that works similarly, however have not tried it myself yet. Have a good one! Tom

I've also had mixed results with the MS internet connection sharing. My WIN2000 machine at work on a small 3 machine system refuses to assign addresses to the other machines. So no go. But, set the thing up in 3 minutes on a small home network with the server running WIN2000, a Vaio running WIN2000 and a P233 running WIN98!! Go figure. NETBUI maybe the answer.

ICS works flawlessly. All you need to do is add IP to both cards (or ensure it is there), set up your internet connection via one card, and when finished, right click the internet connection and select sharing... and follow the prompts. Don't assign any addresses, ICS does all that for you. I have used ICS numerous times in mixed environments with everything from XP, 2000 to ME, 98, 95 and NT; never once have I had anything but absolute luck. Give it a second try, it's easier than you may think...

I almost agree 100%, very close. I am having a problem that I could use some help with. Similar to some of the mentioned configuraitons I am using a software based router using MS Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Advanced Server really is just Win 2000 with a few extra things for back ground tasks, security, administration, and multiple users environments. The share is very similar. I have been using the ICS with SBCs DSL service with 1 DSL server where the internet connection is shared and 3 other machines all running Windows 2000 Pro. Mail can be received but not sent, it is rejected by the server. Also, web surfing is great and fast until we go to a secure site that requires a login such as ebay sign in page. The sign works fine from the DSL server machine but does not work from the other 3 machines that share the connection. All machines are dhcp and non have static IP addresses. SBC has been no help at all on the MS software router configuration and I am very discouraged by them. I have tried to implement the RRAS allow routing on the MS Windows 2000 Server but have not gotten that to work. Using the more basic ICS on the virtual DSL connection shares the internet connection but not to secure sites. The DSL server has 2 nic cards, one for the intranet and one for the ADSL modem connection. Would someone please tell me how to configure the server and other machines to allow secure web site sign in such as the ebay sign in page. Thank you, Kevin
