Windows2000
===========

edit desktop.ini in according folder and change:

ConfirmFileOp=0

1: Show without warning
0: Show warning

-----------------------------------------------------------

Win98
=====

Goto "Options" and select "Show all files. (Sorry if a little different, I´m translating
from German!)

edit desktop.ini:

[ExtShellFolderViews]
Default={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}
{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}={5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}

[{5984FFE0-28D4-11CF-AE66-08002B2E1262}]
;PersistMoniker=file://Folder.htt

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0

In the second section

PersistMoniker=file://Folder.htt

add a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line:

;PersistMoniker=file://Folder.htt

That´s it.

Well ... I followed the instructions and it did get rid of the "Show Files" nag.
BUT... it also disabled the file preview effect.

So what I did instead was: I moved the Folder.htt file from C:\Windows to a floppy
disk (just in case I didnt like the results of my little experiment ::grin::)

Then I Copied the Folder.htt file from the C:\Windows\Web folder and pasted it to
C:\Windows

                     tadaaa !!!!! =O)

PS: Since It worked fine I also pasted it to the C:\Windows\System folder. If for
some ungodly reason I need to set it back to normal I have the original Folder.htt
in a floppy disk.
And I believe you can't put that Folder.htt anywhere on your hard drive cause then
that folder you put it in will give you the "Show Files" nag.
(Not %100 sure, but wasnt interested in testing it.. lol)

Tekbonk, thank you, this worked well for me: I created a folder called "annoyances" , then went to the windows folder, clicked "show files" cut the "folder.htt" file and pasted it to the "annoyances" folder. Then opened the "web" folder (which is in the windows folder) and copied the "folder.htt" file from there, and pasted it into the windows folder. ......... .......... !!!!!! !!!!!! Oddly when I open the "annoyances" folder, it does not display the "show files" warning. .......... .......... Note ! if you cannot find the "folder.htt" file in the windows folder, because it is a hidden or system file. Then you will need to click the view menu (between "edit and "go") choose "folder options" from the bottom of the drop down menu, click the "view" tab, and check the "show all files" box. Now you should be able to see the "folder.htt" file. Thank you both for your help. donovanski.

Thank you very much for the information. Under XP I found that after deleteing the folder.htt and NOT copying another form the \windows\web folder, the folder inherited the properties of the C:\ and didnt display the message anymore ether. Thanks for giving me the info to fix the problem!! Dan MCP2kS

If you are using 2000, the easiest way, is to go into C:\Winnt\web (Make sure your hidden files and dangerous system files are showing.) Look for that folder.htt. Once you have found it, copy it, and paste it into program files, system32, and winnt. Worked like a charm! :-)

Actually, under WIN2K, Editing "Desktop.ini" worked great for me. However, I had
to edit every single instance of the desktop.ini file manually because there are
a couple dozen files in various directories. Each file controls several access options
(among other things) pertaining to that directory only. I don't know but I suspect
that you could do the same thing under WIN XP since XP is basically an incremental
upgrade to WIN2K

Nice tip guys. Note that also you can just delete the desktop.ini and folder.htt files*, and then Windows will treat the folder as a regular one.

In other words, this also gets rid of the "There is no need to modify the contents of this folder" idiot messages.

BTW, folder.htt is a regular HTML file, consisting of several JScript functions, and so you could edit it with notepad or whatever to change the idiot messages if you felt that way inclined... Just open it, and search for the text of the message you wish to replace.

* to be on the safe side, you may want to copy the files first, to a suitably named directory (one called NotAllWindowsUsersAreCompleteMoronsThankyouGates should do fine). However, I've now done this on both my win 2k and win98 machines, and it works great. (The preview effecct might possibly be lost if you don't view folders "As Web Page" by default, but it hasn't affected either of my machines)

Forget about everything above !! (for Win2K) Just run a search on your computer on "folder.htt" Edit each file except the one in the Winnt\web folder with notepad Find this : var gShowFiles = false; and change it to : var gShowFiles = true; Do this for each folder.htt file in your Program Files - Winnt - Winnt\System32 And that's it ! Nothing else needed... it works ! Bye

I also tried this and found that it removes the entire file viewer thing on the left side of the folder. I also found that just adding a space to the end of any line in the folder.htt will have the same effect. I am wondering if there is some check that Windows runs to make sure that this file isn't changed before it executes it. (removing the space and re-saving will restore the folder to normal) I also use win2k

I used the "Folder.htt" swap out in Windows 98 and it worked like a charm. This was one of my most annoying Windows 98 items... So in the world of 15 minutes fame you are officially a God! Thanks! PS I almost forgot. I had changed out the desktop.ini information also in that folder prior to doing this, so I am not certain if that needs to be an accompanying action to make this change or not. I did not change anything in the Windows registry.

Tried it, didn't work :( What did work for me was modifying both desktop.ini (as you said) AND folder.htt. I changed folder.htt to say "var showfiles: true" instead of "var showfiles: false"
