Question about 'How do I add or remove sound events from Control Panel?'

I have a question about How
do I add or remove sound events from Control Panel?:
I would like to get my "default beep" back in my list of sound events on my windows2000
machine. I've checked the registry and all entries are there, but the "sounds and
multimedia" window doesn't show the "Default Beep" entry. However, if I log on as
administrator, the "Default Beep" is there. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks

Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel...... Double Click on Sounds...... Now you can
scroll up and down the list of Items for which you can assign sounds..... HighLight
the Item you wish to assign a sound. From the selection window browse to find the
sound you want, highlight it (which brings it into the selection window)... To the
right is an ?"Audio Player, which allows you to verify your selection)
.
Does it rain here?......Yes it does......Frequently

That's just it. The "default beep" item isn't there! I want to know how to get it
back in the selection list.

had the same problem.. the only solution I came up with was to
- load xp with another user,
- exported registry section which contained the sound scheme,
- log on normally
- delete the corrupted registry section
- finally import the "healty" one
- reboot.
oh.. which one is it? open regedit and under
Hkey_Current_User/AppEvents
you will find EventLabels and Schemes.
I replaced the whole section (AppEvents) and it worked fine.
hope I helped

Hi Joey Mitchell. You must be the person who got the yahoo name "Joey Mitchell" before
I did. I'm just mailing you out of curiosity since you're the only doppleganger that
I have (that I know of). I'm 38 and live in Chicago. Judging from your post here
you know a great deal more than I do about these computing machines. Mail me back
if you like. Have a great life nontheless. Ciao, Joey.

Missing default beep (was: re: Question about 'How do I add or remove sound events from Control Panel?')

My Default beep Sound option was missing too. You're solution fixed it.
I added a new user, logged in as that user, ran REGEDIT, exported
the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents subkey to a .reg file, logged
back in with the regular user account, double-clicked on the
new .reg file to merge the subkey, and the "default beep" was
back and working fine. I didn't even have to reboot.

Hi Eric
I also had this problem. Basically, it's caused by uninstalling Nortons AntiVirus.
Do you recall doing that prior to your default beep sound event going missing?
It appears the Nortons uninstaller deletes this sound event from the registry.
It's a very annoying bug, but I have no way of contacting Nortons to let them know
about it.
Regards,
David.

Yes. I did uninstall Norton Anti-Virus, or at least I tried to.
I now use the free AVG anti-virus from GriSoft.

On XP you can recreate the default beeps with this registry entry. Type the following
into any text file called something .reg and double click it to import into the registry.
for example, the file beep.reg contains... (use the text between the dashed lines)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default]
"Default Beep"=""
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\.Current]
@="Windows XP Ding.WAV"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default\.default]
@="Windows XP Ding.WAV"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
you can make the Windows XP Ding.WAV anything you want or just make it "" to at least
restore the sound event. Then use the control panel later to pick the sound you
want to use. The last entry in this file will be the entry used for the Windows
XP default scheme, so you should probably keep it as is in this example.

This is definetely a problem with un-installing norton antivirus software. Here
is a fix (for windows2000):
Open regedit and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default
There should be another .Default key under this key. If it does not exit it, creat
a new key and call it .Default.
You can create default sounds under this key similar to the other events or simply
go to Sounds/Multimedia in ControlPanel and set your Default Beep sound to whatever
you want.
Hope this helps.

Dear Eric,
I currently use WinXP. My e-mail, MSN Messenger and other sound schemes are missing.
I followed up your instructions step by step however; I had no luck. I had created
another user in the same PC, exported HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents subkey, (just as
you suggested) to my Shared Docs. I saved it as a Registration File, (.reg) and ran
regedit. Deleted the corrupted / missing file and imported the new file. Although
it says the transfer was successful, no changes took place.
Please advice,
Juan.

Did the sounds work in the new user profile?
