Question about 'Why are some entries missing from the Start Menu?'

i wouldn't consider this one of the worst design ideas ever, i actually find it useful - beats sifting through a hundred odd start menu items for something you use every day. the longer you use it, the less frequent changes in your start menu too. and if you really do hate it, you can turn it off.

I think it is usefull too. When I use my computer a few months, the start menu is full of crap. This feature helps me by hiding all that crap. What's the harm in clicking once more when you want to start a program you've never used?

That's why you should think ahead, and make your own start menu categories to put stuff in so you don't have hundreds in one screen. Even if you don't think ahead, you can make folders later and organize.

But you can go to Windows/Start menu and edit all you want to make the start menu readable and logical. It's just a bunch of folders after all. Disappearing the entries (with this option) is lousy design. I turn it off, but then I also go in and edit the grouping of the programs/folders so when I hit START PROGRAMS, I see a logical, simple list. Terry

hi, Err, I know this sounds domb but I lost how to get to taskbar options. I hav only just moved up to 2K and I was on windoze 98 SE. There is NO settings menu on my Start menu and it isnt in the Control Panel. I tried right- clicking and Properities. But It said to me "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator" I am the Admin, and have even tried doing this job logged in as Admin user. It doesn't work. I hav a feeling that this problem was on windoze98 as well but I'm not sure. Can you help me remove it.... This system of settings is CRAP I think I love Linux much better but I felt I should have both, this is my duel boot sys. Thanx alot if you can hlp me :)

That depends on your take. If you are scared of your computer or too lazy to organize your Start Menu, then this feature is really greate. But if you are someone that organizes your Start Menu, then this feature really sucks. Note - If you clean up the extra entries (like manuals, product URL links, etc.) from your Start Menu, then you would not have so much crap in the Start Menu. Also uninstall the warez that you don't want anymore also helps out in cleaning out some of that crap from your Start Menu too.

No this feature is NOT great. It is stupid. The bottom line is organize your own crap, if you rather have windoze do it for you thats your problem. Why do most people have to suffer from the lazyness or lack of intelligence of a few ? Actually the worst is not the Start menu but the applications like IE and Outlook. Anybody has a trick to turn that off ? (example: some of my favorites always disapear when I look for them and this is REALLY fustrating)

Anybody has a trick to turn that off? Nobody said how to turn the damn "feature" off... I do organize, but I also have a lot of software. It SUCKS, plain and simple. In office, in windoze, in theory and /most of all/ in reality...
