I suppose there is a way to do it by editing the registry but there are a lot of
freeware and shareware programs but one I like and use in Win98 and Win2K. It changes
the wallpaper at regular intervals sets the text color and makes the background transparent
Wallpaper Changer

You can use the Group Policy MMC to remove some desktop icons and tweak a few
settings to increase security. See the following image...note: to open the GP MMC,
go to your Start Menu >> Run >> type "gpedit.msc" (no quotes) >> hit Enter. Then
go to the location you see in the left hand side of the graphic. In fact, if you're
looking to tweak your system, check the whole thing out, there are lots of little
security tweak in there

Ta for your comprehensive reply Carl.I was finally able to get it working. The best
way I found is to enable active desktop and then hide icons becomes an option under
customize when you right click on the desktop. Cheers mate

have to remember your fix, I don't use the web style desktop myself........But I
now see there are some uses for it!

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer
From the menu select Edit > New > DWORD value
Name it "NoDesktop"
Double-click this entry and give it the value 1
Close the registry editor and reboot your computer
To restore the icons on the desktop, change the value of the NoDesktop Key to 0.

Hiya, i think the easiest way to hide all the icons on the desktop is to right click
on the desktop > active desktop > show desktop icons
Hope this helps
Regards
Dan

I prefer that method as well, Dan. But, everytime i do this, it not only removes
the icons, but also my wallpaper. And on top of that, it adds a very bothersome taskbar
on the lefthand side of the desktop which has options like "make new folder" "share
this folder" "shared documents" etc. How do you make the wallpaper stay and the taskbar
leave??
