Question about 'What do I do with

I have a question about What do I do with "unknown" devices in Device Manager?:

I have an unknown device in device manager which has only occurred since I upgraded to win2000pro. Everything seems to be working ok, and all my known devices have drivers, and there no conflicts. If I click on the icon it says unknown device~this device is working ok. should I worry about this? or do anything about it. Many thanks.

Update the driver for the device in question, if there is a memory or irq conflict try to change the settings from resource tab. // Vipers

I respectfully disagree.   If Mark is having no troubles, just leave well enough alone.   In fact, what you suggest, Vipers, could potentially initiate hardware related problems.

Just my opinion.

Yes it could, but it will say so before you save anything. If you save when you are in some sort of conflict, then you will have a big problem. Sure you could just leave it alone if it's not causing any conflict, but if it does, then you have to do something and that is what i suggested. The choise is for the user to do. // Vipers

wouldn't simply backing up the registry before playing with the hardware be a nice back-up plan?? (no pun intended). If Mark backed up his registry, he should be able to restore the "original" copy of the registry which would place the operating system in it's original "pristine" condition...

The problem with this answer, is the person doesn't know what device it is....How do you install a driver for a device when you have no idea what device it is?

The other option: if everything is working, ignore it!
