Matt-
Interesting that no one else has replied yet. I had also become used to using Quikview
under 95/98, and it still appears under many menus as an option under WIN 2000 -
however, an error message tells me it hasn't been installed. That led me to believe
there was an option somewhere, but apparently not. I tried copying Quikview.exe from
my WIN 98 system to WIN 2000, but it won't run.
Thanks for taking the time to document your question, at least I won't spend much
more time chasing what used to be a friendly ghost, is now just a ghost.

I am running Win 2000 professional and I've just succeeded in using the version from
NT to give me this functionality again.
By the way, it looks like you can buy a retail copy from JASC at a reduced price
right now. See http://www.jasc.com/products/qvp/

Philip, how did you confiqure that in W2K? I've got it copied, but not working.
I tried making a new File type of EXE to associate with it but hosed up all the
EXEs on the box. The registry trick didn't work either.

It is more than just copying the EXE file and setting the appropriate file associations.
You will need to modify the W2K registry, so you should take the usual precautions
and the usual disclaimers apply.
1. If you have a NT machine with quick view installed, you need to make a copy all
the files in the folder where quikview.exe is. Normally the default location is
c:\WINNT\System32\Viewers
2. Put all these files in the equivalent location on the W2K machine. The default
location should be
c:\WINNT\System32\Viewers.
You may have to create a new folder "Viewers" if it doesn't exist in c:\WINNT\System32
3. Next, you need to enter a whole load of entries in to the W2K registry. The quickest
way of doing this is as follows:
a. On the NT machine, run regedit and look for the following keywords "quikview.exe"
(without the c in quick) and "SCC Quick Viewer"
On my NT machine, I found it under the following sections
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F0F08735-0C36-101B-B086-0020AF07D0F4}]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\QuickView]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F0F08735-0C36-101B-B086-0020AF07D0F4}]
and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\QuickView]
b. Use the registry editor and export these registry sections into .reg files and
copy them to the W2K machine. It may be convenient to place them into the same folder
as the quikview files.
4. On the W2K machine, right click on the .reg files copied from the NT machine and
select the edit option to check that they do indeed contain the correct information
from the NT registry.
When you are satisfied, close the file.
Then right click on the .reg file and select the Merge option to merge the entries
into the W2K registry.
5. When you have completed merging the .reg files, you're done.
I hope this works for you.
The list of file types it can preview is not large, but it should be adequate for
the usual ones.
If you want something more substantial, then the JASC Quick View 7 Plus appears to
be good value for money, except that it takes up a lot of disk space for installation
and needs more RAM to run.

Man, you are so nice. Disclaimer noticed :-)
Goal: regain the information on .EXEs that QuickView gave me in WinNT for my W2K
boxes. "Image Optional Header" information, like "Size of Stack Reserved" (for performance
tuning large Citrix networks).
?Is there something else I can use on .EXEs instead to get at such info?
Thanks...Bob

I'm not sure how much detail you're after but you could try this if you haven't already
done so.
Create a shortcut in the "Send To" menu to point to quikview.exe, then right click
on the EXE or DLL or any file and "Send To" the quikview shortcut. Some details
of the kind you described can be obtained.

Philip, I've been following this post with curiosity. Hard to believe that it's over
a year old! I'm wondering just what useful information QuickView can provide to a
non-programmer like myself. I frequently open exe's in QuickView in hopes of learning
something about it but I don't know what I'm looking for! Can you give me any suggestions
or is this a subject that is too complicated to overview briefly? For example, I
recently tried to figure out what GMT.exe was doing on my computer.I didn't install
it and noone in my family admitted to installing it, and yet I knew it was "running"
because I would spot a listing in my Task Manager (Windows 98 (notSE)) from time
to time. QuickView displayed it as a Windows Executable 32 bit for Windows 95 and
NT and then provided Technical File Information- Image File Header, Image Optional
Header, and Header Information that had no practical value to me. I'm wondering if
there is something useful in all that for me or if this stuff is useful only to someone
intending to work with the "code" of the application. You won't hurt my feelings
if you post back and tell me it is too complicated a topic for this post and is best
suited for sophisticates who know programming. At least I'll know enough to turn
it off and save a few MBs! Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi
Not being a serious programmer so I'm sorry I can't help any further. My main use
of quick view is to just check email attachments to make sure they are not harmful
and also to get a quick look at files without having to start the full applications.

Hi Philip,
Can one install this on WinXP and where can I find the full package of quikview.exe.
You see I only save the exe and not all the files that comes with it... :(
Also, you say you use it to check out email attachements. Do you actually dare and
save these attachements :) I don't. Unless I trust them, I guess one can check
these trusted ones.
I thank you for your time, and effort.
Regards,
Student of Life.

I was able to get quikview.exe running under Win2000 using the suggested registry
merge, but I'm unable to recreate the right-click context menu entry that I had under
NT4. Does anyone know how to add & remove items from the right-click menu on an
object? Thanks.

Hi
The method I used to get it working under W2K did not work for WinXP.
I actually went ahead and bought a copy of Quick View Plus 7 from JASC when it was
discounted by 50% - real value.
Looks like JASC have now passed the product on to Avantstar (www.avantstar.com) -
now at the normal price.
I never open attachments (double left click) in emails even when they are from trusted
sources.
Even if they have got pass my virus checker, I still either use quick view (using
right click) to view them first or save them separately and scan them again before
opening them in the appropriate application.
Quick view does not run any executable code, so no executables or macros will run.
Philip.

Hi Bob
You should have been able to get the right click option for Quick View after merging
the registry files.
Any way, here is a link which tells you how to add it.

Hi,
If Visual C++ 6.0 is installed,
one can use Tools->Dependency Walker
for the same. It also gives an option to
configure quikview.exe as an external viewer.
cheers

(-: Question about 'Use Quick View with Any File'

I found a cool util on the web years ago (PCMag.co.za) called 'Image View'. This
is an extention to the normal quick view with a few extra supported picture file
types (FreeWare).
This was for Win95 at the time but I still use it as my Quick View alt.
I use WinNT4's quikview.exe because Win2K don't have it any more. I haven't test
it on XP, but will check and keep ya posted.
Here is a QuickView.zip
file that's got the installation and quikview.exe (WinNT4s :-o Hope I don't get into
trouble for that, Sorry MS). Just read the Readme.txt
file in the zip file for instruction.
Cheers,
