I have a question about Share
an Internet Connection:
I did everything that was mentioned, but the pc upstairs will not get on the internet.
I am running no firewall that i know of. I can ping the 2 computers but I can not
get an outside ip addres pinged from the other pc. The ICS server is this one, windows
2000 professional. The client is on a windows 98 secod edition platform. All of
the networking components are right. I have 2 NiC's in the host and 1 in the client,
I am about to cry! I dont have a clue whats wrong here. Thanks for any help in advance
:)

Sorry...give it up and buy a router. I went through the same thing and the went
and bought an SMC dsl router and everything works fine. You'll save a lot of heartache
if you just forget you've seen the letters ICS. Just my opinion.

I'm currently in exactly the same boat. My server is Win2000 connected to ADSL and
my client is a Windows 98SE Laptop. I have been able to get the laptop to send and
receive email across the network but that's as far as I can go. Web browsing or anything
else never seems to work no matter what I do. Unless someone knows a secret to make
it work I'm about to give up.

Hmmmm....
Make sure your Internet connected Pc is 192.168.0.1, (Sorry didn't read past post)
I found that with 2000 it was best to assign my isp's DNS servers to it's network
tcp/ip config, so that if you request DHCP it fills those in. had alot of problems
when networked pc's couldn't resolve the ns entries.
Oh yeah and make sure your gateway is set to again 192.168.0.1
Failing that hard set all the config into the networked pc's
good luck

I have the same issue
WIN2K SERVER
Configed with ICS, DNS set to ISP setting, ICS set up on the DSL connection (i.e.
not the PPPoE). Set up on one ethernet card
Second card (LAN) - Set to 192.168.0.1, DNS to ISP setting, all else disabled
WIN ME CLIENT - connected via Hub
Address set to 192.168.0.2 (Static), gateway is 192.168.0.1, DNS set to ISP
I can ping the win2k and vice versa, but no public address

i have not tried this yet, but i come here seeking salutions to real problems. if
i want to hear "forget it and get a router" i can goto any chat room on the world
wide web !
thank you for actually sharing how to make win2k ics work. knowlege like yours is
priceless. because you succeded where every one else gave up. your experience makes
you that much smarter then the rest. i realize some people have alot of money and/or
lack time. for them a fast easy methode is needed or prefered. but i like many use
ics because they do not have the money to go out and buy there way out of problems
every time one comes up. "necesity is the mother of invention" ;)

Hmmm That's a tough one, my advice would be use nmap or something similar on your
internal network and see what ports internally are open, if when you ping it times
out then i tcould be another problem i have encountered but have yet to find anyone
with a solution, ICS in 2K likes to filter stuff the IPSEC left unchanged doesn't
help this situation one bit.
Also check your MTU speeds across your network and your dial up, network should be
like 1500 decimal, and your dial up should be a lower speed, i only discovered this
problem after i tweaked my 2k pc and my 98 pc could do everything apart from surf
or open any connection on port 80! bizzare indeed if you ask me.
My advised chuck another machien into the network, see if that makes a difference,
also disable your browse master on your client machines.
Please let me know how you got on.

I am having a very similar problem with a slight difference. I am using a Win2k
machine with 2 x NICs (one for the cable modem internet connection, the other to
a hub). My second machine is a Win95 machine, configured for DHCP address requesting.
When I switch both machines on, everything is fine and both machines can see the
Internet. But after about ten-fifteen minutes of web browsing on the Win95 machine,
it stops being able to access the web. It can ping the Win2k machine, but cannot
ping an outside address.
Does anyone have any ideas about this?

This is just a thought. Is your ISP using Roadrunner? Here in Australia the Bigpond
ISP uses Roadrunner on cable modem connections. It sends a 'heartbeat' down the line
every 5 minutes or so to check the line's still being used. If it gets no reply then
it disconnects. For networked machines this means the client has trouble either connecting
to or staying connected to the net. We have a utility we can install to get around
this problem. While researching for myself I came across mention of a utility that
does much the same thing for the US. I don't know if this will work but have a look,
it might :) http://www.nopcode.com
Good luck.

Hi,
I have a win2k - win2k LAN and I have some problems too. My server is connected to
a satellite connection, and a second NC is connected to my client win2k machine,
through a twisted pair cable.
In Network settings, server is using IP 10.0.4.100, mask 255.0.0.0 and gateway empty,
and my client is using 10.0.4.101, and mask 255.0.0.0 and gateway 10.0.4.100.
In my client Internet Explorer, it is set to use proxy server 10.0.4.100
In my client machine, I can browse through webpages but whenever I try to ping an
outside IP or URI, I receive a Timeout..
Any ideas?

get a program called Spoon proxy
it worked for us, until we eventaully figured it out.
the win98se computer needs to be set to "get all settings automatically" ie, internet
explorer settings, NIC settings etc etc
the win2000 machine should have a static IP of yes 192.168.0.1 on its NIC -> Win98
