Question about 'Get Rid of the Logon Screen'
Tuesday, January 8, 2002 at 3:04 pm Posted by Paul
(1 messages posted)
I have a question about Get
Rid of the Logon Screen: I purchased a computer with Win 2000 Pro from my former
(now defunct company). They didn't take out the login password so I can't log on.
Is there any way to log in and then change the password?
I don't mind if I have to reformat the hard drive since I don't have a need for anything
that may have been left on the drive.
Thanks

you need to boot up the PC then delete the file named sam in winnt/system32/config.
The directory may also be other name like Win2000 than winnt.
To boot up the PC, you can use a W9x startup floppy.
If the Win2000 is installed using NTFS rather than FAT32, you must use NTFSDOS to
boot up and delete. NTFS may be downloaded, serach for the name on Internet.

I have a similar problem--I'm the computer teacher and in our school one of the kids
messed up the win 2000 pro logon--whether on purpose or accidently I can't get into
this computer. I hate the thought of reformatting because of my labs T1 network system.
One of my friends told me there's a "back door" entry and I'm waiting for him to
show me but till then this station is kaput. Would appreciate the help...
Thanks, Mr. Di

ull never be prompt for a password again.
In (win98) just right click on network neighborhood and click the drop down menu
and click windows login. Also make sure u DONT have a password set. And if its a
fresh OS and u dont type a password to begin with ull never be prompted in WIN98.

Thank you very much for the tip! I had the same problem, and it saved the trouble
and time of reformatting and reinstalling the whole OS!

The term "W9x" in an unofficial one, used by Geeks for the trio W/95-W/98-W/me.
For general command line purposes, the one from Windows 98 Second Edition is most
popular. Download the image that bootdisk says matches to Win98se.

You specifically ASKED about W9x, and I answered you. As long as the drive uses
"FAT32", the first part of this thread's initial advice still applies (added at the
end).
All Windows 2000 versions are considered "Professional" by Microsoft. The PC and
the Hard Drive don't care what boot disk is used to start up and then to edit the
password file. For NTFS on the Hdd, then a Win98, or any other "9X" makes no difference
-- none will work. So see again the original reply.
