Question about 'Force NumLock to Behave'

I have a question about Force NumLock to Behave:

I am trying to get num lock to not come on after windows 2000 loads. It doesn't seem to matter if in the bios the numlock is turned off or on. Windows 2000 turns it on shortly after the log in. I tried to follow solution # 3 in the article, setting the key value to 0, but when I reboot the num lock comes on again. When I recheck the registry key it is always set to 2 the original value of the key before I change it. I am logged on as an administrator and can't figure out whey the value keeps returning to 2. Thanks in advance for any help. Ryan

Hi Dan, I edited the .default user in hkey_users and got the Numlock enabled for the initial login screen. Then it turned off for my login. I see that the Initial Indicators key for hkey_current_user keeps reverting to 0. Maybe this is what Ryan was saying, although he is trying to do the opposite action. thanks, Will

I have noticed that Win2000 "remembers" the state of the Num Lock before the shut down. For example: if the Num Lock was "ON" before the shutdown if will come back "ON" after the boot, however, if the Num Lock was "OFF" before the shut down, it will be "OFF" after the Win2000 loads. Pavel

I had the same problem. Running option #3 as you did actually turned on my numlock, but not until after I was logged in. The problem is I wanted my numlock on for my login password. If this is your problem too, then you need to set HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators to the value 2, just like the HKEY_CURRENT_USER setting. Good luck.

If you are on a network, your default profile has the numlock setting which overrides your BIOS setting as well as any registry settings you modify. You need to modify this profile or call IT to change your profile... Allan

I just want the Numlock to come on and stay on until I use the fkey to modifiy it. (What I consider normal for numlock) I have the BIOS configured for 'on' and it gets turned off every time the OS loads up. What causes this? Any help you can offer - or text that I can read / print out would be Great!!
