Does your sound work? Could it be onboard (motherboard) sound? If so, is there
an BIOS option to disable onboard sound. Did your system/motherboard come with a
driver disk? Sound, video, agp, ... drivers can usually be found there. If your
sound is working, don't worry about the yellow exclamation!

Thanks for the tip on utilizing the BIOS CD to locate driver. I'd tried a multimeda
CD but it didn't have the right driver (probably was out of date). I used your advice
on BIOS and it located a driver and device is working properly. Thanks

The Advance AC-97 driver should be available on the CD that came with your motherboard.
I found the following page but you are required to register before downloading.

Hey Neil,
If you have 2 sound devices on your machine, like you had one on board but bought
a Sound Card anyway, then win2k/XP will say the disabled built in sound is having
problems and won't start up. Don't worry about it, your PCI sound card should still
work fine.
However if you have no sound, and you don't know what kind of sound you have, here's
the way I would go about your problem. Look at the plugs along the back of your
computer, if the sound plugs, (speaker, lineout, and mic) are along the edge of the
case near your keyboard and mouse plugs, then you have onboard sound. In this case
you can find out what audio controller your computer uses (usually AC97) by either
looking in the manual that came with your motherboard / system, looking online to
see what the specs are for your system, or simply opening up the case, grabbing a
flashlight and seeing what the chip(s) near your sound plugs have written on them
(the most accurate way to know); also onboard sound may have come with your chipset,
(like nForce or 845G).
Case 2, your sound plugs appear in an expansion slot perpendicular to the motherbard.
You have a Sound Card, now you can find out what kind it is and get some drivers.

Had a similar problem. I have an AOpen board with onboard sound. Load the driver
from the CD that comes with your board. If you get interruptions in your sound in
Windows Media Payer go to Plugins - Options- Devices-properties. Check "Use Error
Detection". The audio will play slightly sloer but the interruptions will disappear.
Voila! No more skips in audio! Hope this helps.

I have the same problem except I only have one sound device, the onboard sound. I
have tried everything, reinstalling all drivers, reinstalling windows, trying a different
version of windows, updating drivers, formatting another driver and installing windows
on it, fiddling with BIOS, nothing seems to work.

ITS EASSSSYYYYYY!!!!
all you have to do is.....
if you have a soundcard seperate from your onboard audio, turn off your on bourd
audio in your bios setup!
all xp is trying to do, is find the driver for your on board sound, that you haven't
yet switched off.

Hi Guys,
I'm having similar symptoms with my pc. There is no sound and the system keeps looking
for the on-board sound driver which cannot be found. I have an external card as the
sound slots are not near the mouse/keyboard cable inputs.
Question is how do I turn the BIOS off? Is it in the device manager or during start-up?
I have disabled the system speaker setting under system settings in the device manager
but there is still no sound.
Sincerely appreciate any help.
Cheers!
Steve

Hello all you computer nerds!! You poor souls, we know what you're going through.
While we can't claim total origination of this solution, we can pass it on to you,
our suffering brethen. If you get the yellow monster on Multimedia Audio Controller,
and can't hear a thing from your speakers, try downloading realtek ac'97 audio driver.
The real credit goes to another source on an earlier anoyance forum that we couldn't
find a second time. The download is free, and it worked like a charm. After many
hours of frustration, the pain and suffering is over. The music never sounded so
sweet!

Hello!
This isn\t a driver problem but probably caused by HKey Local machine. I dare not
find out exactly where. I tried Knoppix and had some wonderful music. A complex
system like Windows creates disaster for a medium user as Linux handles everything.

I get the same message. My neighbour accidentally deleted an item called SoundMax
and since then I have no sound and absolutely no idea how to fix it. I looked through
the disks I have but nothing seemed to be what I was looking for. I am new to the
internet also which means my time searching is usually unproductive.
I would appreciate any tips you might have to help me fix this.

I had the same problem after reloading windows after a crash. I went to www.microsoft.com
and searched for and found a windows update for the driver sound card driver. Now
you want to go to the system folder, device manager, and right click and delete the
multimedia or sound video and game controller. When you restart windows it will
prompt you, "new hardware found" search for drivers for this device. Click the box
which appears as "windows updates" and it will automatically load. It did for me,
(after two hours trying to figure out what was wrong, before I went to Microsofts
update). I hope this will solve your problem.
