Possibly another way

To turn off the system speaker...
The article in the website mentions that you can't remove it permanently...true,
but you can Disable it.... in the device manager, you can find it under System Devices,
System Speaker...Should work...haven't tried it but common sense says....
By the way, you can also use this trick to "get rid" of devices that you can't get
drivers for in the OS you're using (for example, a lot of TV Tuner cards don't have
drivers that work past windows 98 - how nice - but having them listed in the Device
Manager causes lock ups, etc...just disable them.

This wont work on win 2000, but this will:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound]
"Beep"="no"
"ExtendedSounds"="no"
The values default to yes, and there is no way to change them to no from the gui.
NOTE relogon required to take effect.

We run NT at work and I believe this is exactly how our IS guy fixed the problem
on our production floor. 27+ technicians running processes that use the system default
beep gets annoying after awhile! Andreas is right, there's no way to shut it off
via the gui. We've all tried it first before running screaming into the IS office
;-)

A way in NT via GUI

Actually,
If you go to the control panel and open "Devices" then scroll to the "Beep" device
you can stop it, and make it disabled on startup... this solves it quite nicely...
WinNT SP6...

And if all else fails, simply select "mute" on the volume control in the tray, but
that mutes ALL sound.

Another possibility?

Open Computer Management (right-click the My Computer icon, and choose Manage), then
click Device Manager. From the View menu, choose Show Hidden Devices. In the right-hand
pane, under Non-Plug and Play Drivers, double-click "Beep." In the Beep Properties
window that appears, choose choose "Do not use this device (disable)" from the drop-down
box under Device Usage.

Thank you so much. that damn beep drives me crazy. During all these years, it never
occurred to me that there'd be 'hidden' devices.
